Gretchen Thomas, Wine and Spirits Director, is full of great tips for dining around Spain. After a friend of hers asked for advice about where to eat during an upcoming trip to Madrid, she offered to share the same insights with us! Here are the highlights:
If I had only one place to eat in Madrid tomorrow, I would go to Sacha. Amazing amazing amazing. BUT, reservations are necessary; this is a small place and very loved, so don’t expect to walk in and grab a table – and there’s no bar where you can hang out while you wait. But make the effort, it is worth it.
Places for walking in and having a great experience:
- Entrevinos – They have a great wine program with well thought out food, and very cozy.
- Sala de Despiece – Offers a really creative culinary experience. It’s always packed. Go at lunch time, and be prepared to stand while you eat. We LOVE this place; it’s very inventive.
- Taberna Laredo – You can dine at the bar or take a table. Fantastic wine cellar, especially if you want to order something not Spanish, like Champagne and Burgundy, and incredible, seasonal driven food. For the dining room, I recommend calling ahead.
- El Doble – A little beer and tapas bar down the street from Sala de Despiece that has incredible “preserved” foods like canned cockles, mussels, and fresh seafood as well.
